2017-2018 School Year Registration

Our tutors’ schedules fill up fast.  Be sure to register early for this school year so that you can choose a schedule that will work well for you and your family!  You’ll find everything you need to know about registration in this post, including when, where and how to register, the amount of the registration deposit, and other important dates.

When to Register

Registration for Symbols families begins on the following dates and times for each location:

Vancouver: Monday, July 17th @ 9:30am

Coquitlam: Wednesday, July 19th @ 9:30am

Richmond: Friday, July 21st @ 9:30am

How to Register

To register, please phone us or visit us in person at the center on or after the registration day.  On the first day of registration (which is typically very busy), we need to take registrations in the order they arrive and we also need to avoid confusion, so we cannot complete a registration by email or voicemail; we need to speak with you on the phone or in person.  If you receive a busy signal when you call, instead of calling back, please leave a voicemail with your name and callback number.  All voicemails are automatically timestamped and emailed to us; we will reply to voicemails in the order they are left.  After the first day of registration, things will be calmer and we’ll be able to complete registrations by email and voicemail.  Remember – the sooner you register, the more likely you are to get the exact schedule you want!

Registration Deposit

To complete a registration we will be taking a non-refundable $150.00 deposit. This deposit will be fully credited to your Term 1 invoice; it is not a registration fee.  If we have your credit card information in our system, the deposit will be charged to your card within a few days of registration.  If we do not have your credit card information on file, we ask that you either provide your credit card information, or cash or a cheque, at the time of registration.

Other Useful Info

This registration is for the entire 2017/2018 school year, beginning September 5th, 2017 and ending June 29th, 2018.  Although our school year has two terms, terms are for billing purposes only; students are registered for the entire school year, unless we are given one month notice to end tutoring.  Other important dates, including all days we are closed for statutory holidays, the Winter Break and our one week Spring Break, can be found on our online calendar.

Price Change

Effective September 5th, 2017, our rate will be increased by $2 per lesson (about a 3% increase) for all students.  For the typical 2-lesson-per-week student, the price increase translates to at most an additional $16/month on our equal monthly payment, but for many students (especially those whose schedules fall on stat holidays), it will be less.  This price increase is necessary to pay for a wage increase for our excellent tutors, and to offset other increased overhead costs we have been facing, particularly with our leases.  This is just our 3rd price increase in our 11 year history.

  1. What is your session fee for language and math? Is it the same or different? How many sessions per wk do you recommend seeing my child? Are there any additional fees I need to be aware of? Do you do regular progress updates so I can see if my child is improving?

    • Thanks for your interest Andrea! With the exception of a few special circumstances, all new students see us for a minimum of two lessons per week. The only additional fee beyond our per-lesson rate (which is the same for language and math) is the intake assessment fee. Parents can opt out of the intake assessment fee (and will then not receive an intake assessment report), but we don’t always recommend that as the student will then not qualify for our free 6 month reassessment. In addition to the 6 month reassessment, we provide monthly emailed progress reports, as well as an emailed lesson note after every lesson, with a brief summary of what was covered in the lesson. Tutors also spend 5 minutes after each lesson with the parent and student to discuss lesson content, general progress, and to review any homework that may be sent home.
