THE DIAGNOSTIC

All new Symbols students begin with the diagnostic, which is a detailed and sequential process developed and refined by Symbols.  The diagnostic spans the first two to three lessons and results in a diagnostic report made available to the student’s parents through our secure website. 

The diagnostic allows us to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the student in various areas (such as auditory and visual capabilities, comprehension, sequencing, written output and reading fluency), providing the tutor with an informed basis on which to establish the student’s goals and individualized lesson plans. 

Although we try to make the diagnostic as light-hearted and fun as possible, it is in essence an assessment, and as such can be somewhat stressful for some children.  We encourage parents to explain to their children that the diagnostic is not a test, and that future lessons will be considerably more interesting and fun.

Note that the Symbols diagnostic is not similar to and should not be considered as an alternative to a psycho-educational assessment, which should be performed by a qualified psychologist.
